the litle bit of rock in the front is actually a huge underground rock and is said to have stopped a big earthquake in the 1800s. Since then, the tree hasnt grown, but has remained alive, and there have been no earthquakes in japan since.

so deer are sacred in this shrine...and they let you feed them....well my carrots were clearly the best because teh two largest males started to fight for the rights to my carrots
